Creating an Ecosystem of Emotional Wisdom
Kindred emerged from a desire to cultivate a supportive space for sharing and finding solace in collective emotional experiences. With the therapeutic potential of shared narratives at its core, Kindred is a virtual reality app proposal pitched in the form of a metaphorical garden. Visitors grappling with emotional challenges are paired with 'gardeners'—those who have weathered similar experiences, facilitating an exchange of emotional wisdom and empathy. This interplay of new perspectives with seasoned resilience nurtures a dynamic ecosystem that promotes empathy, connection, and emotional growth.
↑ TELLING THE STORY
It begins with Chiharu, a young exchange student from Kyoto, navigating the challenges of adapting to life in Los Angeles. Language barriers and cultural differences compound her sense of isolation, an experience that finds resonance within the virtual gardens of Kindred. Here, she steeps in the environment, surrounded by a stream of leaves each holding a story, a shared experience. She listens, absorbs, and eventually adds her own chapter—a personal account of her loneliness.
Years later, Sam, a 10-year-old local boy, enters the same virtual garden. He stumbles upon Chiharu's leaf, her recording now a part of the garden's tapestry. Her story of palpable loneliness in a new world offers Sam understanding and comfort. Chiharu's story, once a personal testament to her struggles, transforms into a shared memory of empathy and connection, bridging the gap between two seemingly separate lives.
↓ CRAFTING THE METAPHOR
In Kindred, the garden metaphor serves as a space where anonymous 'visitors' immerse themselves in stories, sharing emotional wisdom and growing into 'gardeners' as they contribute their journeys. This system shapes Kindred into a platform rich in empathy, where one can find relatable tales within gardens named for emotions like anxiety, melancholy, stress, or frustration. As visitors mature into gardeners, the leaves they leave—initial records of vulnerability—morph into powerful aids, guiding others through their own narratives in the gardens of Kindred.

"To be encouraged, inspired, and uplifted by the emotional wisdom of our predecessors, so that one day others may be elevated by ours."

↓ THE CONTEXT OF ISOLATION
Conceived amid the pandemic, a period marked by a stark increase in mental health challenges, Kindred addresses the nuanced complexities of modern isolation. This era, particularly trying for young adults, has amplified the psychological impacts of urbanization and globalization, transforming isolation into a common yet deeply personal experience. The project roots itself in this contemporary context, where emotional distancing has become an inadvertent norm.
Anonymity, often a catalyst for loneliness, paradoxically holds the potential for closeness and intimacy within Kindred. Much like the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous, the platform harnesses anonymity not as a barrier, but as a gateway to vulnerability and connection. This duality allows users to share and engage with profound personal experiences, fostering a sense of community and empathy often lost in traditional social interactions.
↑ THE ARGUMENT FOR VIRTUAL REALITY
The choice of Virtual Reality (VR) as the medium for Kindred is rooted in its unique ability to craft a sense of presence and stillness, pivotal for introspection. Drawing from the minimalist, evocative art of James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson, and Donald Judd, Kindred uses VR as an active meditation space. It offers a sanctuary away from physical world distractions, allowing for deeper emotional exploration and mental tranquility, much like a modern meditation chamber.
